We started an exciting new activity during study hall today that will continue each Friday. We began hosting Town Hall Meetings and we are going to use this time to give announcements, honor achievements, celebrate birthdays and share student work. This will be a great way to boost community amongst the students and build school pride. Although the teachers will be running the meeting for the first two weeks, we are going to have students elect council members to run the rest of the meetings. In order for a student to run for these positions, they will need to write a paragraph explaining why they will be a perfect fit for the job. These paragraphs need to be submitted to their homeroom teacher no later then November 9th. Students will read their paragraphs during our Town Hall Meeting on November 10th and then all Pathfinders will vote.
The available jobs are:
Moderator
The moderator runs the meetings, introduces each item of business, calls on members of the group to speak, keeps track of time, etc. Their job is to keep the meeting flowing so that all business is addressed.
Parliamentarian
The parliamentarian reminds the group of the rules and calls the group to order. They are not responsible for reminding individuals or disciplining behavior but they need to make sure that the group is having a productive meeting.
Recording Secretary
The recording secretary writes down all the important information and decisions from each meeting. The minutes from the previous meeting are read to remind the group of their decisions, to let them know what business wasn’t finished and to remind them of new business that may have been discussed.
Corresponding Secretary
There are two corresponding secretaries. They act as ambassadors to other grades, parent organizations, administration, etc. They are responsible for helping to arrange guest speakers, writing thank-you notes to guests, contacting parents/community members when appropriate, etc. They are the outward face of the Pathfinders.
Enjoy your weekend and don’t forget to turn your clocks back!
